Pilates For Runners | Part 2: Barefoot Conditioning and Plyometrics

27/06/2022

The feet and ankles are tasked with bearing the load of the entire body. When running, gravitational forces dramatically increase the load placed through these structures, so it is highly important to ensure our feet and ankles are both strong and mobile.

Conditioning the feet, ankles, knees and hips, provides protection for the bones, connective tissues and muscles. It also helps improve the return of elastic energy - which is energy stored in the tendons and muscles that help to reduce our oxygen cost when running. Great news for our overall running performance!!

Mobility around the feet and ankles is also important. Particularly for stability, alignment and running mechanics. It can also help prevent jarring, which can lead to problems such as stress fractures and tendonitis.
